Russia exempt from sanctions in the field of intellectual property

Since May 5, 2022, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has excluded from sanctions against Russia all transactions and operations regarding the protection of any form of intellectual property, patent right and copyright, trademarks. All transactions and operations with respect to patent right, trademarks, copyright and other forms of intellectual property protection in the United States and the Russian Federation, which were previously prohibited by Russia's foreign malicious activity sanctions regulations, are now once again permitted.

In particular, permitted are all operations and transactions related to:

Since June 1, 2021. Eurasian Design Patents now available

Eurasian Industrial Design Patents will now be granted by the Eurasian Patent Office (the EAPO)

Since June 1, 2021 the EAPO starts accepting Eurasian Industrial Design Applications.
Thus, now in addition to Eurasian patents for inventions, Eurasian patents for industrial designs will also be granted by the EAPO.

The Eurasian Patent Office informs that as of 01.06. 2021 applications for the grant of Eurasian design patents will be the accepted in respect of the following five EA member- states:
  • Azerbaijan (AZ),
  • Armenia (AM),
  • Kazakhstan (KZ),
  • Kyrgyzstan (KG),
  • Russian Federation (RU)
In accordance with Article 22 (4) of the Protocol on the Protection of Industrial Designs to the Eurasian Patent Convention of September 9, 1994 (Protocol), Eurasian design patents will be effective on the territory of those states in respect of which the Protocol has already entered into force as of the date of filing the respective Eurasian design applications.
Belarus signed the Protocol on the Protection of Industrial Designs and will ratify it in the nearest time.
